37 million expected to travel this weekend
NEW YORK - As millions of Americans prepare for the first big holiday of the summer season, the price of gasoline is the talk of the town. Despite prices hovering above $2.85 a gallon, AAA says it expects a slight increase in the number of travelers this year. The auto club has estimated that 37.6 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this Memorial Day weekend, up about one percent from last year. For people traveling by rail on the East Coast this weekend, Amtrak says train service should be in good shape. It says the cause of the power outage yesterday that led to long delays along the Atlantic seaboard is still under investigation. Thousands of commuters were stranded during the morning rush hour when a cascading power outage on Amtrak equipment shut down service between New York and Washington.
For people driving on Texas highways, they may get where they're going faster than before. The speed limit is now up to 80 miles per hour, the nation's highest.
